Miles needed a family portrait for his classroom at school, so we decided to go have a little family photo fun this weekend at Mill Ruins Park in Mpls. We went for a few different looks, everything from the mug shot to silly faces. And only in looking at these photos did I realize how overdue I am for a cut & color. Good thing I have an appointment scheduled next week. Yikes - did you see that re-growth?! I'm using the "just had a baby, still working on looking half decent" excuse...

on my way back home
It's hard to believe that Lydia turnd one month old yesterday. The past four weeks have been a sleepless blur. I keep hearing the lyrics to a Sheryl Crow song runnimg through my head: No one said it would be easy, but no one said it would be this hard...I think that about sums it up. It's amazing to me that women all over the world do this -- parent two, three, four or more little ones everyday. Seriously, this is a difficult job. I'm definitely still adjusting. I'm sure once Lydia settles into a regular eating and sleeping pattern, things will be easier. Funny how you forget these early mothering experiences so easily. In the wee hours of the morning, while feeding or soothing Lydia, memories of Miles' newborn days come rushing back to me from the depths of the memory vault, things I had completely forgotten. Experiences that I'm able to draw upon the second time around. And then I remind myself that these moments, both good and bad, are fleeting. And that holding this warm, tiny creature in my arms, rocking her to sleep, is exactly what I want to be doing, exactly what IT is all about.

our brief encounter with cloth (more on diapering)
Everything was set. The diaper service had been scheduled, our first month of service paid. The cloth pre-folds had been delivered and were neatly stacked and waiting for baby's arrival. The covers were purchased and ready to cover a newborn bum.
Baby arrived. And the first thing I did was reach for the "backup" bag of disposables I had stashed in the closet. Why? What happened? I was so set on using cloth diapers. Well, I rationalized that while we were in the hospital, it would make sense to use disposables and that I wouldn't start cloth until we got home. But then I tried getting those pre-folds onto a 6 lb baby with an umbilical cord stump, and things just didn't go the way I had hoped. The (newborn sized) diapers seemed way too big, and the fit was extremely awkward. Lydia looked like a baby sumo-wrestler with that thing on and could barely move her legs. I waited about two weeks before canceling the diaper service. I probably should have waited it out a bit longer, but I knew that even when she got bigger and the diapers fit better, I still was going to be hesitant about using the pre-folds.
Enter gDiapers. I had heard of these, but didn't know exactly what they were. They are a hybrid really, a cross between cloth and disposable. Better for the environment than a disposable, but much easier to use and with a much better fit for a newborn than other cloth diapers. I've been using them for almost a week and I'm completely hooked. Not only are they easy to use, they've got the cuteness of a cloth diaper. Love them. I highly recommend them to those considering an alternative to disposables. Right now, we're using the disposable inserts, but there is an option to buy cloth inserts if you'd rather go that route.
